History of Dr. Bates

Dr. William Horatio Bates was born in 1860 in Network, New Jersey. He received his Medical Degree in 1885 and practiced both privately and in various hospitals in New York City.

From 1886 to 1891 he was an instructor in ophthalmology at the New York Postgraduate Hospital and medical School, and at various time he also acted as advisor to school boards in New York State. From 1907 to 1922 he took outpatient clinics at the Harlem Hospital.

Before the turn of the century Dr. Bates had become increasingly dissatisfied with conventional ophthalmological practice, and he consequently began his own research into eyesight disorders, which led to the development of The Bates Method.

Dr. Bates went on to formulate a new set of theories about eyesight and he developed a method to help people to improve their sight.

The theories developed by Dr. Bates are continuing to be taught all over the world, with professional teachers in many countries helping people to see better without glasses, lenses or disease.

Eye charts in Schools:

In 1911 and 1912 the same system was introduced into some of the schools of New York City. with an attendance of about 10,000 pupils. Many of the teachers did what they could to defeat the purpose of the system , which is to give the children daily exercise in distant vision with a familiar object as the point of fixation. A considerable number, however, use the system intelligently and persistently, and less than a year, were able to present results showing that of three thousand children with imperfect sight over one thousand had obtained normal vision by its means.

Preservation of good eyesight is almost impossible without proper eye education and mental relaxation. The quieter the mind the better the eyesight. To use your eyes correctly follow the following instructions:

The Bares Method

It is now over 100 years since Dr. William H Bates first began developing and refining his theories of the causes of poor sight. He used his method for short sight, long sight, astigmatism. Old-age sight, squint, ‘lazy’ eye, and even structural diseases such as macular degeneration – nothing was left out and he found all could be benefited by learning normal and relaxed use of the eyes and mind.

We’re proud at the Bates Association for Vision Education to be the forerunners of the Bates Method on the Internet. The method works in so many ways to the benefit of people with eyesight problems. in contrast to conventional eyesight care, its educative approach shows people how to apply healthy vision habits that got them into a visual difficulty in the first place.

We think it makes sense that eyes need no artificial aids to seeing. Humans are undoubtedly ingenious, but instead of devising ever more complicated ways of bypassing nature, let’s use that brilliance to discover what nature provided in the first place.

On the tomb in the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Florence was found the following inscription: “Here lies Salvino degli Armati, inventor of Spectacles, Inventor of Spectacles. May God pardon him his sins.”

General hints for Eye Care

  • Learn right blinking. Blinking is a quick method to give rest to the eyes.
  • Also blinking keeps the eyes moist. The lachrymal glands under the eyelid produce
an antiseptic fluid that cleans the eyes.
  • While reading blink once in every line.
  • Keep your eyelids half closed while reading or watching a distant object.
  • Even while looking upwards the upper eyelids should not be raised but only the chin.
  • Turn your head in the direction in which you are looking.
  • Shift your glance constantly from one point to another.
  • Sunlight is the best source of light. However do not let sunlight fall directly on the paper you are reading.
  • While using electronic light, see that light comes from the back and falls on the paper.

While reading:
  • Hold the book at a distance from where it is seen best.
  • The book or newspaper should be held under the chain so that eyes are half closed.
  • Move your head from side to side while reading so that the word you are reading is directly under your nose.
  • Mentally make a note of the fact that printed matter is black and paper is white.
  • Blink once in every line.
  • Read in proper light.
  • Do not lie down and read. Also do not read in moving vehicles.

While writing:
  • While writing keep your attention on the tip of the pen with which you are writing.
  • Keep blinking normally. If you want to check what you have written then stop writing and hold the paper in your hands and read as per the above instructions.
  • But don’t go on writing and reading simultaneously.

While working with the computer:
  • See that the screen is below your eye level so that your eyelids are half closed.
  • Have a comfortable distance between your eyes and the computer screen.
  • Blink regularly and normally.
  • Do palming for 5-10 minutes after working on the computer for 1 hour.

  • Have proper lighting in the room.
    Diet:

According to the ancient Ayurvedic Science, diet is responsible for ones well-being and health. A proper diet is of importance for healthy eyes. ‘Netradwayan’ –the ancient book of ayurveda about eyes, explain that stomach are related – what you eat has a direct effect on your eyes; also a clean digestive system improves vision. Here at Mission Fitness we suggest a diet which is good not only for the eyes but also for the total health. For healthy eyes include the following in your diet-

    • Green vegetables like palak, methi, green papper, cabbage, celery (ajmoda), ect.
    • Orange Fruits and vegetables like carrots, papaya, mango, pumpkin, etc.
    • Sprouted wheat, moong, matki, masoor, etc. at least thrice a week.
    • Protein rich diet fish, chicken, milk, dals, etc.
    • Good amount of vitamin C rich fruits like amla, guava, lime, oranges etc. are important.
      Laughter:

According to Dr. W.H.Bates the eyes and mind are related. He says ‘Quieter the mind better is the eyesight’, and what better way can there to be quieter the mind than by laughter. It has been researchable that during deep laughter (belly laughter) our thoughts cease and the mind becomes still.

Laughter helps you to relax your body and mind. In the morning and before you go to sleep, laugh continuously for a minimum of 5 minutes. If you want to do it as meditation the whole body should participate in the laughter. It should be belly laughter. At the end of laughing, do palming for 5 minutes. Yoga – and Beyond:

For Meir Schneider, yoga wasn’t only the key to gaining spiritual insight. It also was the key to simply gaining sight. “Yoga helped cure my blindness” claims Schneider, who was born blind. He credits daily yoga exercises for helping bring back his vision, which he says is now 20/60. “And it’s still improvement”.

The techniques Schneider teaches at Center for Self-Healing in San Francisco, California, and in his book Self Healing My Life and Vision are influenced by the work done by turn-of-the-century ophthalmogist and eye-exercise proponent Dr. William Bates. “I took the Bates Method and added a bit of my own work to it”, says Schneider. While it might be straining science a bit to say it cures blindness, some of his techniques may be helpful in handling eyestrain.
      Take a tea break:

But don’t drink it; put it on your eyes instead. “Takes a towel and soak it in eyebright tea”, says Schneider. “Lie down the warm towel over your closed eyes and leave it there for 10 to 15 minutes. It will make your eyestrain go away”. Be very careful not to pour tea into your eyes, though. And also let the cool down a bit after the pot boils before you soak the towel in it.

Try a different sort of hand eye coordination:

If you want help your eyes, Schneider says, you need to lend them a hand. “Take your hands and rub them together until they are warm. Then close your eyes and place the plant the palms on your eye orbits.

Don’t press on your eyes, just cover them. Breath deeply and slowly and slowly and visualize the color black. Do this for 20 minutes every day.

Put your eyes “on the blink”

Your eyes have their own personal massages – the eyelids. “Make it a point to consciously blink your eyes 300 times every day and not squint,” says Schneider. “Each blink cleanses your eyes, and gives them a tiny little massage.” And it’s free.

Shut out the light by shutting your eyes

The best way to relieve eyestrain is to rest your eyes. Your may do it when you are in the phone or if you need to read or write; just close your eyes. Considering the time you spend on the phone you can easily rest your eyes for almost an hour or two daily. It helps to relive eyestrain.
